What is "AlTiN Coating"

AlTiN (Aluminum Titanium Nitride) is a hard, wear-resistant coating commonly applied to cutting tools in CNC machining. The coating is made by depositing a thin layer of AlTiN onto the tool’s surface using a physical vapor deposition (PVD) process.

AlTiN coating provides several benefits to cutting tools, including improved hardness, wear resistance, and heat resistance. This improved durability allows the cutting tool to maintain its sharpness and cutting ability for longer periods of time, reducing the need for frequent tool changes and improving the overall efficiency of the machining process. AlTiN coatings are commonly applied to cutting tools for high-speed machining applications and for machining materials that are difficult to cut, such as stainless steel and titanium.

AlTiN should not be used to cut aluminum because the workpiece can stick to the coating on the cutter, leading to a poor finish or a broken cutter.
